BARK
POACHERS:
Bark Poachers who steal the
bark of the native slippery
elm (Ulmus rubra), which is
highly regarded in herbal
medicine for soothing
coughs, intestinal
complaints and skin
problems, have become a
major problem on public
lands in Appalachia, and the
National Center for the
Preservation of Medical
Herbs has added this tree to
its list of endangered
plants that include ginseng,
bloodroot and black cohosh.
