Sunday Pond Fishing

Sunday Pond Fishing
from 5:00 PM Till 6:00 PM

I took a minimalist approach this afternoon, taking one pack of Yamamoto Senko black & blue worms and one pack of Owner, cutting point, 2/0 ot, longneck hooks with bait stopper.

Rebel assumes the routine, short forays into the woods, and watching over me from high ground.

I caught six largemouth bass, all over 2-pounds each.

I purchased a new spinning reel, called the Shimano Saros.  It's the 5th Shimano I've ever purchased, and it's the BEST I've ever had to date.  Incredibly sensitive and smooth.  I own one Abu Garcia (good) and a recent addition called the Doug Hannon Wave Runner (weak).  You can't beat a Shimano bait or spin caster.

My favorite rod is my 6-foot, 6-inch, medium-heavy St. Croix.  Today I was using Berkley Trilene XL, 12-pound fluorescent blue, monofilament line.

All the strikes were hard and fast, I guess they were hungry!

The royal fern (Osmunda regalis, OBL) was beautiful today, as it is changing color.  This fern is native and occurs in saturated areas along streams, seeps, shoreline and wet meadows.  In both Florida and New York the fern is considered rare (vulnerable) due to exploitation (digging it up from the wild and planting it in water gardens).

The forest surrounding the pond is mature chestnut, black and white oak.  The understory is filled with American chestnut (Castanea dentata) saplings.
