Howard County 4-H Gun Club AGC
Shotgun Practice 8/17/08 Mark

AGC Shotgun Practice

Waiting for the train to go by on
Marriottsville Road at the Patapsco
River, which separates Howard and
Baltimore County. When we saw four
engines in the lead we knew it was going
to be a long train. | |
We practiced today on the wobble
trap range, which is similar to
traditional trap, but with any given
clay being presented not only left
to right, but also up or down.
Some clays were quite high and some
hugged the ground. | |
Tony and Mark. The
voice-activated thrower is
sensitive, so if you are going to
celebrate a great shot, you have to
be quick about it, in that you only
have 3-seconds before the machine
re-sets for the next target.
Instructors were forced to whisper,
which is tough to hear when you have
ear plugs in. | |
Matt, Tony, Mark and Nick on the
line. | |
Mark calls his clay and begins the
tracking, overtaking and downing
process. | |
A view at ground level from the
voice-activated speaker.
A buck, doe and fawn fed along the
edge of the tree line and were
oblivious to the sounds of the
shotgun, rain of pellets and
breaking clay that surrounded them.
The 4-H'ers were interrupted by a
spider wasp that had paralyzed a
wolf spider and was dragging it
along a trap station and back to her
nest. A predatory spider wasp
will inject venom into a spider that
causes paralysis and will then lay
eggs into the "host" spider. A
few days later, when the eggs hatch
and the young spiders emerge, they
take advantage of the surrounding
spider-meal. Sounds like a
plot for a science-fiction movie.
One of the advantages of the Wobble
Trap Station #4 is the available
afternoon shade on a hot summer
day. | |
Mark, Karl, Nick, Dennis and
Instructor Tom. | |
We played the 'Olympics of
Wobble Trap' today. In
the Men's category Mr. Mark Burchick
won the gold, and in the 4-H youth
Division Nick Boeh took the gold
medal, Matt took the silver and Karl
took the bronze. | |
From the side-lines Mrs. Boeh worked
on a color pencil drawing of a lily.

|
Concurrent with shotgun practice, Mr.
Kevin Lancaster and Mr. Steve Boeh were
managing rifle practice on the 100-yard
range, with several 4-H Club members
attending. The Maryland State 4-H
Rifle Match is 4-weeks from now, and we
are the host club. We will be
having an Officer's meeting soon in
advance of the general meeting to
discuss our obligations and fund-raising
concession operations. Please
watch your e-mails for upcoming
activities and updates.
Also, the annual Maryland State 4-H
Shotgun Tournament will be held on
November 8 at the Prince George's County
Trap and Skeet Range. That only
allows us five more practice dates
before the Tournament. We will
have a discussion among the shotgun
instructors and we will schedule one
skeet and sporting clays practice at PG
in advance of the tournament.
Club 4-H'er, Katerina Svensson works
weekends at PG, and we may be able to
get her to be our Sporting Clays guide,
and if so we will make sure to give her
a good tip for her services. |
